You do not need a color-coded spreadsheet to prepare for an international trip. You do need to check the things an airline cannot fix at the gate.
First: passport validity and entry permission
Open your passport and read the expiration date—not just the month. Some destinations require passports to remain valid for months beyond the end of a trip, and airlines may deny boarding when a traveler does not meet the destination’s rule. Check the entry, transit, visa, and passport-validity requirements for your specific nationality and itinerary through official government sources. A rule for one destination is not a rule for every destination.
Then: examine each connection
Find out whether a connection is on one ticket or separate reservations. If it is separate, the next airline generally does not have the same obligation to protect the onward trip when the first flight is late. Check whether you change terminals, whether your bag is checked through, whether the connection involves an airport change, and whether you might need to clear immigration during transit.
Make a small “if things go wrong” file
Keep your flight confirmation, lodging address, travel-insurance information if you have it, and the airline’s official contact channel accessible offline. Share the itinerary with someone you trust. Do not leave security rules until the night before
Carry-on rules can be nuanced. The TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” tool is more reliable than a social-media video for an unusual item, and even permitted items can receive additional screening. Give yourself time to repack if an item must go into checked luggage.
A calm final check
- Passport, visa or authorization, and entry requirements: confirmed.
- Names on ticket and documents: exact match.
- Connection airports, terminal changes, and bag handling: understood.
- Phone charged, documents available offline, and airline app installed: ready.
